Baby Feeding: Training Babies to Eat On Their Own
When your baby starts to eat solid foods, it is a good idea to start training them to hold their food and put their food into their mouths. You can start doing with this a biter biscuits. Biter biscuits are made specially for babies because they easily melt in your baby’s mouth when they are wet. Babies from as early as 6 months should be trained to feed themselves. At 9 – 10 months, you can start training your baby using spoon.
How do you train your baby to feel themselves? When it’s feeding time, take away all toys in front of your baby. This is reinforce the idea that when it’s time to eat, the baby should focus on eating and chewing alone. Put a small part of biscuit in your baby’s mouth and then put the biscuit on their hand. When they like the taste of the biscuit, they will intuitively put the biscuit in their hand to their mouth.

Do not buy only one kind of biscuits. Your baby might not like the taste or the texture of the biscuit that you are giving them. Experiment on different kinds of biscuits. You can even give your babies Danish cookies which are sweet. They they like the taste of the biscuits, they will eventually learn to put the cookies into their mouths. For many babies, putting things into their mouths is a natural thing but if your baby is like mine who didn’t know how to hold feeding bottles and food on their own, then this post will be of help to you.
Another tip is to eat with your baby. Place them in a high chair and let them see you eat. Babies learn very fast. In no time, they’ll imitate what you’re doing and learn how to feed themselves on their own. Always have a glass of water near your baby and make them drink frequently.
The development of babies are different from one baby to another. When your neighbor’s baby learned eating on their own at 5 months, it doesn’t mean that you need to worry when your baby is not yet holding their feeding bottles at 7 months old. Just be patient in training them and let them learn at their own pace.
