Healthy School Snacks
I think it is harder today to feed children today than during our childhood. I have just been to the supermarket and while walking along the aisle, I realized there’s really not much choice for healthy food for my three-year old pre-schooler and six-year old grader to bring at school for snacks.
We live 30 minutes away from my son’s school and these last few days, my son was always hungry and looking for something to eat during our drive home from school. He gets out of school at 10 in the morning.

So, I was in the supermarket deciding on what to buy for my children for snacks during school days. There are lots of biscuits and cookies but I don’t want to get them used to eating these food with empty calories. Besides, the excess sugar might give them the excess energy (read: hyper-activity).
If you are like me who don’t have too much time to prepare for your child’s food, it can pose a problem deciding on what food to give to your child when they’ve reached school-age already.
The best is always the home-prepared snacks such as sandwiches. My children are not picky eaters. At three, Nicky eats everything I give him even fruits and vegetables. So I decided to wake up earlier every day to prepare for his snacks.
Today, I made chicken sandwich for Nicky and Fifi. I added some chopped lettuce and a little mayonnaise.
Even if it takes more of my time in the morning, I think I prefer preparing for my kids’ snack because I am assured that he’s not eating too many sweets. As early as now, I want to teach them healthy eating habits and I think I am not having any problem with this. Nicky and Fifi loved the chicken sandwich. Tomorrow, I’ll make them ham and cheese sandwich. I hope I don’t run out of ideas.
