Learning about Speech Disorders in Children
I always try to catch up my reading on children’s psychology. This week, I’m reading up on children’s speech disorders. I like to know as much as I can as a parent so that I can be the best parent that I can be.
Speech delay and speech disorder are two things that parents don’t want their children to have. The first one is nothing to be scared about. Different children have different pace of development. One child may learn to speak at an earlier as the other child with the same age but this is normal. Eventually the other child will learn to speak as well.
When your child is already two years old and you notice that there is something different with his language development, you should see a doctor immediately.
My son was already two when he spoke his first word. Although he can understand basic commands like, “Don’t do that,” we were worried about his speech delay. When we went to the doctor, the doctor told us that he did not see anything wrong with our son; that speech delay was normal.
So how would you know if your child has a speech disorder like childhood apraxia? When you notice something very different in the way he speaks, observe your child first. In many cases, it’s just lisp or stutter. Correct your child’s speech first by talking to him or her in the correct way.
When your child is already 2 years old and he or she is still talking that way or not talking at all, it is time to take him to the doctor. It is best to know of a disorder early on because most speech disorders are treatable with speech therapy.
