Parenting Teenagers

Teenagers today are constantly being bombarded with images they see on TV and movies. As much as we want to shield our teenagers from negative behaviors and values, there is just too much of them out there and as parents, we often worry about how we can raise teenagers with good values.

They listen to music that talks about depression, suicide, sex, pregnancies, and hating the world. Television shows, internet and video games expose them to violence, hate and violent behavior. Media is full of news of teenaged celebrities who are drug addicts, caught driving under the influence, teens being pregnant, teens saying hurting words to each other.

It is no wonder that teens grow up to be hateful of everyone. It seems as if they are angry at the world. You see it in their fashion, in the way they talk, in the way they behave.

As parents, we have to remember that being teenagers is just a phase in their lives. Do you remember how you were as teens? Didn’t you rebel against your parents too? Didn’t you sneaked out of the house late at night too?

Teenagers today may be exposed to more bad influences because of the media but they will change. The best thing that we can do as parents is to try and spend time with our teenage kids. We should try to have open communication with them and do things with them such as play video games with them or watch movies with them. And most importantly, we should not grow weary of being good examples to our children.

Teenagers will outgrow their fashion sense, their way of trashy talking, they violent behavior if we persist to be good role models for them.
